History lesson please

History lesson please

Postby KiwiSteve » Wed Dec 17, 2008 3:33 am

I'd be interested to learn a bit of history as I now have an 88 an 89 and a 90 model, the 90 has a different boot and a coil located on the intake manifold that looks a lot more modern that the one on the 88. What is better about later ones and what upgrades were done ?? or point me in the right direction anyways...

As far as i can remember, the differences between p1 and p2:
- Grille
- Bootlid/spoiler
- Vacume sunroof standard on p2
- Dashboard changed from really flimsy, practical shape, to slightly less flimsy, less practical shape
- Dash/interior/exterior plastics go from grey to black on GTI, looses red stripe on door bins (3 door)
- Seat fabric changes from stripey to check, seat shape changed later ('92?)
- Coil moved to inlet manifold
- Many wiring loom differences, p2 engine loom bundled with instruments loom, unpluged under dash, rather than being seperate.
- Gearbox on p2 is be3 not be1.

Hard to say which is better, Ive got a softspot for both. P2s seem to rust quite badly.

There are a couple of topics regarding the differences, I just can't seem to find them atm. Also, the indicator positioning on the front wings was different, also the phase 1 has a grey steering wheel as opposed to the later phase 2 black one.

thanks people... seat piping was not my main interest of course! these are New Zealand cars so luckily have not been subject to salt or vinegar ! nor mushy peas.. I will condsider my options for building more sheds to fit all this stuff in and then just look at them awhile..

Pull the fabric back where the piping disappears into the fabric on the corners and have a look to see what colour the piping is, i was quite surprised when i took the seats apart on my p1.
