309 SR Auto to TD plan

Postby rlloyd91 » Sun Dec 16, 2012 4:22 pm

Hi guys,

You may remember my post in newbies section back in early September, I brought my first 309 1.6 auto showroom condition 1 owner jobbie for £200. I had the plan to fix auto box fresh mot and service and sell on. Since then, I fell for the 309 like I had with the 306 and decided once this one is sold by another phase1 to convert to dturbo... After watching similar 309s sell for around 500 mark with same mileage I realised that I would barely break even... So I've decided that this one will become my daly driver shortly!

I've already got the auto box so for a temporary fix I'm going to get it fitted and the car moted in the new year, I can then sell I'm currently daily driver 306 hdi and With those funds buy a cheap low-ish mileage 306 1.9 td and use the engine for the 309.

I have spent quie a lot of time on here looking at other people's projects so have a rough idea what's involved but I have a few questions! Firstly converting it to manual, i know there is gear linkage and floor plate, center consol, pedals and clutch able, but would anything else need to be changed?

secondly the fitting of engine and gearbox, is there there any adaptions needed to the wiring it's self and for the cooling system, does anyone have any experience on whether you simply fit the 306 cooling system, is there any issues for the heaters ect?

Anyone's help or advice would be a great help!

The 309 is completely mint, first thing that will be done once its on the road is for the underside to be professionally undersealed as its completely rust free underneath. For wheel arches and the inside of the doors looks like it will cost around 300 + vat... Anyone else had it professionally done?

Once it's fitted with the dturbo I plan to get her lowered (nothing extreme)almost people measure the gap between the top of the wheel to the wheel arch in millimetres but in the case of mine, it's more like inches! Then fit either to gti alloys or something on the line of bbs alloys, not sure yet!

I've just popped on here thinking of doing an update to my thread to fine, my original post didn't have any photos. Ill start again(coping from my what I've put on Retro rides!)

From 2012/early 2013

I thought after looking and everyone's posts the past few months, I would post about my current project!

Ill try not to bore anyone too much, but ill start from the beginning!

August last year I decided to finally get my self my first project car after getting a council garage and getting a small bonus at work. After having 2 306's I fancied a older Peugeot, I bidded on a few but lost them, but a phase1 1.6 auto came up on eBay in Somerset about 5 miles from my parents house in as new condition expect the gearbox, which would only drive in first and reverse, it looked so mint, I didn't waste my time/money traveling to look at it for it to go over my measly budget of £300... the auction ended without any bids and I messaged to owner and bagged it for £200!... my intentions was to get replacement auto box fitted, service it and mot and sell on.

I got the train down to my parents and my dad came with me, it was even better than expected, boot and back seats looked completely un-used and the engine ran like a peach and backed up with a huge amount of mots/service history. the guy explained his grandmother had brought it from new, and had always been garaged but shortly after the gearbox issue, she was sadly put in a home.

I handed over £200 of notes and took the keys, drove it off the drive on to the road and then called the AA for recovery! 5 hours later recovery was there, and got it back home and put it in the garage. the next day, I went over to have a closer look at her and couldn't believe how tidy she was. This is a photo I took the next day.

Over the next few months I got a replacement gearbox, changed coolant, oil spark plugs. By Christmas, after being completely bored of my daily runner, a 306 hdi, I decided that I wanted to get her on the road for my daily. The plan to get the already brought gearbox, get her mot'ed then sell the 306, with those funds, buy a 205 td for a doner vehicle and get the 309 converted then to a td manual.

This is still my plan, due to tight funds, it hasn't progressed much recently, but on Saturday, she will be taken to a guy to look at the gearbox to give me a quote to get it fitted, so providing all goes well, over the next couple of weeks, the gearbox should be done meaning she can be tax and tested the end of may!

After researching it a bit more (after thinking that a phase 1 registered in 1991 was quite late as the phase 2 had been out for a while at this point) I have found out it had spend the first couple of years of its life in France and only covered 800 miles! the V5 states it was previously registered in another country and the original sales receipt from 1991 where she paid £8000 for it, states first registered in Paris and mileage was just over 800! According to other websites the SR auto was only made between 87-89 so she should be on roughly a f plate. And according to howmanyareleft.com there are only 9 on the road and 3 sorn (including this one)

Anyway....Here are some more photos of the 309!

The jack has never been used

After comparing the make/model of the Tyre's fitted to the rear and spare, it appears they are the ones fitted in the factory (these have now been replaced!

Needs a spot of lowering to say the least!.. have some gti lowing springs ready to be fitted

Image

Box file full of manuals, every mot and service (all completed at the same garage in Exmouth since 1991!)

After spraying the steelies and spending the day, washing, clay bar-ing and waxing, she didn't come up too badly!... just need to sort out the bumpers now!

That's photos taken from shortly after I'd brought her in 2012/early 2013.

Gearbox was replaced apin July and moted which she passed first time with no advisories. I did 12,000 miles in 11 months, with in that time only needing a set of brake pads and a throttle cable! She was taken off the road in July 2014 when I got a 205 TD to use as a daily until funds allow for the conversion! Here's some photos of while she was on the road.

Thei brings it up to date, in May/June 2014 I finally brought the doner vehicle, a 95 205 turbo diesel with 77k not the clock, mechanically it's spot on, but as any doner should be everything else is very tatty and has a number of niggly issues. The 309 was taken off the road in July and safely stored in the garage and to use the 205 daily till funds allow for the conversion!

For some reason the most recent photos I've tired to put up doesn't seem to work, when I get a chance, I'll try to do this. Hope all photos are shown in full, as viewing on my iPad, all photos have been cut in half!

Hoping to complete the conversion end of July, but I would ideally like to get the 309 moted as she is currently and upto then just take her to the shows, hoping to join you all at pugfest :)
