Thanks for the tip. More water has got into the boot even after cleaning the fuel flap drain hole. Ages ago I adjusted the tailgate hinges in an attempt to get a better fit. In the end I discovered that the poor fit was caused by one dud gas strut: the other good one was skewing the tailgate over to one side when it was closed. I will try putting the hinges back to where they were before I started fiddling, to see if that stops the leak.
I have the boot carpet folded in half. Sometimes the leak is so bad it pools under the rear offside passenger seat, making that soggy.
